The Oxford Company gripper frames are our preferred choice for stretching backing fabric. The most important step for successful punch needle rug hooking is stretching your rug backing REALLY tight on a frame. A general rule of thumb is to stretch the fabric as tight as a drum.

Each frame is quick and simple to stretch your rug backing or pattern onto. When your backing is tight, your punch will glide through it with ease. Easy punching makes the craft more relaxing and reduces hand and wrist strain. Taut backing will also make your loops more even! • 14" x 14" - Super for all kinds of projects – coasters, ornaments, small bags, wall hangings, trivets, and many more. Frame can be disassembled for traveling or storage.
• 18" x 18" - This is the most popular size. It works well for chair pads and many other projects. Many punchers also use this frame to make larger rugs. Frame can be disassembled for traveling or storage.

These frame covers are designed for the Oxford Gripper Strip Lap Frames. Made from 2 layers of extra soft fleece and 1 layer of polyfill inside, these extra cushiony frame covers will protect your hands and arms from the sharp gripper strips as you punch. Both sides of the cover have sturdy elastic, making it easy to pop the cover on and off your frame. Even the corners which are the sharpest part of a gripper frame feel so cushiony and comfortable.

These innovative lapstands are lightweight, portable, easy to assemble and unassemble, and can be used individually! Both hoops feature a no-slip surface. When assembled, the whole system is less than 1" in height, easily slipping into your project tote bag. Great for storage, classroom work or traveling.

The Morgan Lap Stand Combo has a unique tongue and groove no-slip hoop configuration which holds the fabric taut while working on your project. These Lap Stands are designed to elevate the project hoop above the lap, and are collapsible. Please note that all pre-cut sizes are measured pre-serging. Size may vary slightly once serged. 

Helpful Tip: Add 5" (12.7cm) on each side of your pattern to make sure you have enough extra to hem your rug. So if your rug is 24" x 36" (60.96 x 91.44cm) your backing should be 34" x 46" (86.36 x 116.84cm). Also, always measure to make sure the final size you choose will fit on your frame!

Abstract

Join us for the Lucky Shamrock edition of Punch Needle Rug Hooking this March. Punch Needle is a fast and easy craft using an ergonomic Oxford punch needle. In this beginner-friendly class, you will create a punch needle rug mug useful as a coaster, framable piece of art, and decorative piece. It makes a great gift too!

Materials

The following materials for the class are curated to facilitate your learning experience. These supplies are not included and must be purchased separately.

Supplies provided:

• All materials!
  • The materials needed for the entire project are provided in the class. This is a rare opportunity to try something new with no equipment investment.
  • Included are the pattern drawn out on monk's cloth, yarn to finish the piece, and finishing materials. 
  • An Oxford punch needle and frame will be provided for your use during the class and retuned at the conclusion.

Supplies you are required to bring:

• Small sharp pointed scissors
• Paper & Pen/Pencil for note taking

This class is held here in our studio at Icon Fiber Arts, 590 Redbird Circle, De Pere, WI 54115. Please arrive 15 minutes early to allow yourself time to get situated. Class starts promptly at 12:00pm. Please notify us prior to the class if you need any accommodations in our learning area.

About the Instructor

Kazuko has been working with fiber arts such as knitting, weaving, spinning, and chemical and natural dying since she moved to the States from Japan in 1985. She started traditional rug hooking and punch needle rug hooking in 2004 and became an Oxford Certified Instructor in 2025.  Her rugs are featured in the books Design Like an Artist and The Haunted Rug by Deana David. Kaz devoted 30 years to teaching high school students, is passionate about teaching, and is excited about sharing her knowledge and skills of punch needle rug hooking with others.

Attendance & Cancellations

This class is a group style class with a minimum of 2 students to go forward and a maximum of 8 students. In the event that a class cannot meet minimum enrollment, it will be cancelled 24 hours in advance. Full refunds will be provided for attendees for classes that don't meet minimum enrollment.

Cancellations: A refund will be provided to attendees if notice is sent 72 hours in advance of the scheduled class. There is no refund or partial refund for the class for missing the session. You may transfer your reservation to another person if your cancellation is within 72 hours before the start of class. In the unlikely event of inclement weather that would prevent the class from meeting, the class will be extended and rescheduled as determined by the Instructor.
